Why Meditate?

Why meditate?

There sure is lot of buzz going around about the benefits of meditation. You’ve probably heard some of the science that backs up what we’ve known and experienced for many years....Meditation is good for us! Without going too deeply into the science, it has been proven to lower blood pressure, reduce the effects of stress on the body, enhance immunity, boost creativity and productivity, reduce insomnia, increase feelings of compassion and overall well being, improve quality of life, and more. All of these benefits are free, with no side effects, and can be achieved in as little as 5-10 minutes a day. It’s like a magic pill, but no prescription is necessary. Some people are even finding it can replace their anti-anxiety medication, anti-depression medication, and even their blood pressure medication. (Big Pharma will probably try to find ways to debunk it’s benefits so it stops eating into their profits!).

Knowing all that meditation can do for you, why aren’t you meditating? The top three reasons are: 1. Not enough time, 2. Can’t quiet my mind, 3. It just doesn’t work for me.

Here’s the truth: 1. If you don’t have even 5-10 minutes for yourself, then you need it more than you realize...in fact it helps increase your productivity, so it actually buys you more time, and how much time do you spend scrolling social media, that would be better used improving your health and well being?  2. No one can quiet their minds! Stopping the mind from thinking is like trying to stop the heart from beating. The goal is not to quiet the mind. All that meditation asks is that you bring your attention to one thing, rather than allowing the mind to bounce endlessly around to a multitude of thoughts (you’ll be surprised how relaxing this actually is).  3. Meditation can work for everyone. Nothing special is required. It can be practiced by anyone almost anywhere at anytime. It’s for everyone. Each experience is different, just like each person is different, and if you’ve tried it and it didn’t work, then perhaps you just haven’t found the technique that’s best suited to you. There are many styles and approaches, and all of them provide benefits. Simply sitting quietly, relaxing your mind, and strengthening your ability to become present to the peacefulness that exists in the present moment, is really what meditation is. It’s when our minds project into some imagined future or replay some version of a past experience that we experience dis-ease. Being in present moment awareness brings ease to the mind, and therefore to the body, bringing more health and balance into your life.
